No Child Left Behind Has Hurt Schools

The No Child Left Behind Act has done more harm than good. The No Child Left Behind Act requires schools funded by the government to do statewide standardized testing to all children. Schools must have adequate yearly progress (AYP) in order to receive funding. A school that misses the AYP mark six years in a row will usually result in closing the school, turning the school into a charter school, having the school being run by a private company, or having the school being taken over by the state office of education. The possibilities are not pleasant.

The most qualms people have about the act is the standardized testing. Many people believe that the standardized testing will cause teachers to only teach the skills needed to perform well on the test, rather than skills that will prepare the students for life. For example, if a teacher knows that a test will only be simple addition problems, he/she will only teach their students addition, rather than how it can be implemented into life.  Also, the standardized testing does not judge all of the qualities of a student, such as creativity or imagination, only the narrow subcategory of skills that are needed in the test.

As a student, I know how stressful the standardized tests can be. I know that the standardized tests are harmful for students. I believe that the No Child Left Behind Act has done more harm than good and should be stopped.
